  • A higher retirement age has a positive effect on the labor participation of older people, but probably also leads to more disability and unemployment benefit claims. This study shows that older employees who are partially disabled for work are more likely to face a full benefit situation due to the increase in the retirement age.

  • There are two major barriers to increasing employment of older workers. First, older workers engaged in codifiable, routine tasks are particularly prone to the risk of being displaced by computers and robots. Second, several countries have in place various labour market institutions that encourage early retirement, such as exceptional entitlements or looser criteria for unemployment and disability benefits applied to older individuals.

  • The Pensions Policy Institute (PPI) has published 'How have other countries dealt with small, deferred member pension pots?'. The PPI was commissioned by the Master Trust Expert Panel, convened by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), to conduct an international study, exploring whether other countries have had similar challenges related to multiple pension accounts, and how these have been dealt with.’
