  • In several countries where pensions are reformed and the retirement age is increased, the issue came up to make an exception for workers with demanding occupations, since health considerations may make it unreasonable to expect them to work longer. We analyze unique Dutch survey data on the public's opinions on what are demanding occupations, on whether it is justified that someone with a demanding occupation can retire earlier, and on the willingness to contribute to an earlier retirement scheme for such occupations through higher taxes.

  • This paper reports preliminary findings from the 2009-10 baseline data from the Attitudes to Ageing in Australia (AAA) survey. The questions were designed and the data then collected while Australia was adjusting to the impacts of the 2007 Global Financial Crisis (GFC) during the Rudd government. At that time there was relatively less government attention to restricting public expenditure related to ageing, and it was before the appointment of the Age Discrimination Commissioner in the Australian Human Rights Commission. This working paper reports findings related to intergenerational equity with comparisons between age, gender, and socio-economic groups.

  • Child care pension benefits in Germany are designed to compensate for maternal employment interruptions due to child-birth. In comparison to most family benefits, child care pension benefits are accumulated upon child birth but only become effective on the verge of retirement. Hence, whether mothers adjust their employment status in response to the economic incentives depends crucially on how they discount the long-run consequences of their current decisions.

  • Insurers and pension funds provide life annuities and pensions that are impacted by both aggregate mortality improvement and individual mortality heterogeneity. Aggregate population mortality trends have shown significant improvement over long periods of time. Individual mortality heterogeneity arises from differing risk characteristics across individuals.

  • Aim of this keynote is to develop a framework how to approch the design of pension policies as rationally as possible. The first step is to realize and accommodate endogenous adjustments. The second syep is to align the root causes of demographic change with corresponding reform steps which include but are not confined by pension reform. The third step is to separate the issues as best as possible to strengthen the political feasibility of refrom.
