The Application of Affine Processes in Multi-Cohort Mortality Model

Cohort effects have been identified in many countries. However, some mortality models only consider the modelling and projection of age-period effects. Others, that incorporate cohort effects, do not consider cohort specific survival curves that are important for pricing and hedging purposes. In this paper, we consider modelling mortality development on a cohort basis, propose and assess a multi-cohort mortality model in an affine framework.

Life expectancies are rapidly increasing and uncertain in all countries in Europe. To keep pension systems affordable, policy reforms are to be implemented which will encourage individuals to work longer and that adjust pension systems such that if life expectancy increases without adjustments in the retirement age, the pension income level decreases.

We model uncertainty of financial parameters and examine its impact on the replacement rate in a DC pension contract. To this end, we develop a novel Bayesian framework that reveals substantial reduction in the lower percentiles for the replacement rate at retirement.

This paper investigates whether employers can induce employees to postpone retirement by offering access to training courses that maintain job proficiency. We use unique, matched employer–employee surveys for the Dutch public sector, which include detailed information on a wide range of HR practices applied in the organization, as well as the expected retirement age of its employees.
